MAI GPT

A Midi Music Transformer exploring the creative ability of generative AI models.

MAI GPT is an exploration into the boundaries of machine creativity. Built as part of a graduate research project at the USC Iovine and Young Academy, this project tested whether a generative AI model could accurately replicate and output the stylistic nuances of legendary classical composers.

By training the transformer on massive sets of MIDI data, the AI was able to generate entirely original compositions mimicking the distinct musical phrasing, pacing, and emotional weight of Johann Sebastian Bach and Frédéric Chopin.
